Wrigley Oral Healthcare Programme, supports the Dental Profession
I am involved with the Wrigley Oral Healthcare Programme. Wrigley are the world’s leading manufacturer of chewing gum. But in addition, they are a supporter of clinical research into the oral health benefits of chewing sugar-free gum. They are key partners to the dental profession and they have over 25 years of involvement to help promote better oral healthcare.
The company has built up a Panel of Experts who support the Oral Healthcare Programme. It comprises Senior Academics, Journalists, Clinicians and Heads of Professional Bodies. As a result, all of us promote the Programme wherever we can, at conferences, exhibitions and in print. In particular, our Dental Practice is involved in exciting local community projects. These include a partnership with The Cooperative in their local stores. Our dental team talked to shoppers about oral healthcare in general, while new point of sale material talked about sugar content.
Sugar free chewing gum is a good way to keep your mouth fresh. But it also generates saliva which is good for fighting bacteria. So educating the public in a relaxed environment helps to spread the word. This one to one interaction is very effective. There is no ‘pressure’ of a surgical environment. Therefore people are more likely to take the message on board. Also giving away free packs of sugar free gum helps to set up a good habit!
